The last time I was at this Starbucks was last Thursday. I was working on a paper for my music class and had to analyze the music played here. This included Shazaming the jazz songs I didn’t know and interviewing the baristas about the choice of music. Turns out, Starbucks actually decides what music the baristas play everyday. This is quite different from my days working at the ice cream store and playing whatever was on my iPod at the moment. After the brief interviews, I sat back down in my comfy chair and wrote about the atmosphere that jazz numbers create in a cafe. As I did so, I heard the baristas talking about how they don’t really like the music they’re forced to play. And in about 3 minutes, I heard the familiar melody of “She Loves You” by the Beatles.
The reaction was immediate. Customers commented on the genre change and sang along. The atmosphere was less soothing, but just as comfortable and even more familiar. I loved the “musical revolution” that began after the baristas realized they didn’t like being told what to listen to.
So anyways, here I sit in the same Starbucks, 6 days later, listening to the one and only “Something”. Yesssss
